Noch eine Woche lang (bis zum 27. Juni 2021; ohne Voranmeldung und Termin) sind die Ausstellung „KÖLN 1945. Alltag in Trümmern“ als auch die neue Installation mit den beeindruckenden Fotografien der kriegszerstörten Stadt im Kölnischen Stadtmuseum zu sehen: Deren Fotograf Karl Hugo Schmölz (1917-1986) „machte sich in der frühen Nachkriegszeit einen Namen als Interpret der Ruinen, wie beispielsweise mit den berühmten Aufnahmen von St. Gereon, 1947, des Historischen Rathauses, 1949, oder des Spanischen Baus, 1949. 1947 wurde Karl Hugo Schmölz vom Nachrichtenamt (…) beauftragt, im Vergleich zu durch Karl Hugo, aber auch schon (von seinem Vater) Hugo Schmölz vor dem Krieg aufgenommenen Köln-Ansichten den Ist-Zustand aus der gleichen Perspektive zu dokumentieren. Das Album wurde an Kommunalpolitiker*innen ausgegeben, um den zügigen Wiederaufbau Kölns voranzutreiben.“ (Zitat: Maurice Cox, Atelier Wim Cox, aus dem Begleitband zur Ausstellung)

Focus on the ruins
For one more week (until 27 June 2021; no advance booking or appointment necessary), the exhibition „KÖLN 1945. Alltag in Trümmern“ as well as the new installation with the impressive photographs of the war-destroyed city can be seen in the Cologne City Museum: The photographer Karl Hugo Schmölz (1917-1986) „made a name for himself in the early post-war period as an interpreter of the ruins, such as with the famous photographs of St. Gereon, 1947, of the Historic Town Hall, 1949, or of the Spanish Building, 1949. In 1947, Karl Hugo Schmölz was commissioned by the Intelligence Office (…) to document the actual state of Cologne from the same perspective in comparison to views of Cologne taken by Karl Hugo, but also already (by his father) Hugo Schmölz before the war.
